Our Building and Learning Environment

Downside Preschool is a purpose built setting designed around the needs of young children. Our open plan layout allows children to move freely between carefully planned areas of learning, supporting independence, curiosity and confidence.

The environment is fully accessible and inclusive, ensuring that all children can explore, play and learn comfortably and safely.

Inside, children can access a wide range of experiences across all areas of learning, including:

• creative and expressive arts
• construction and small world play
• early literacy and mathematics
• role play and imaginative play
• quiet and cosy spaces for rest and reflection

Our preschool is arranged across two adjoining rooms, with the connecting doorway kept open so children can move freely between areas of play. The garden is also freely accessible so children can choose to play indoors or outdoors throughout the session. Outdoor learning is an important part of our provision, offering opportunities for physical development, exploration, nature experiences and active play.

Every area of the preschool is thoughtfully organised to promote:

• exploration and discovery
• communication and collaboration
• safety and wellbeing

Our environment evolves alongside the children, with resources and spaces adapted to reflect their interests, developmental stages and learning journeys.
